Emotional Brain = The Limbic Brain –
consists of the hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala and hippocampus.
Today the word ‘limbic’ is associated with emotion processing, e.g. ‘limbic system’ refers to the brain emotional system’ or ‘emotional brain’.
(vs The Cortex for cognition)

there are 400 billion bits of information per second that reach the brain, only 2,000 bits are utilized so that man has a conscience of the world around them. It is as much information about the environment, about their bodies and about what kind of decision will be taken in time.

So our brain is functioning like a giant sieve, it’s constantly filtering out information all the time in 3 main ways DELETE, DISTORT and GENERALISE in order to process information efficiently.

We form a critical factor filter (Reticular Activating System) as we are growing up that only allow the information through when it fits our beliefs, views and values.

The good news is that scientists have found that The Brain has an ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. This is called Neuroplasticity that allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.

Happy people are always happy and depressed people are always depressed. It’s all a habit / conditioning / patterns of neuroconnections in our brain.

You can master your emotion by changing one of the 2 things –
what you think /focus (a cup half full or half empty)?
what you do with your body – posture, breathing, language (meaning)?


Positive pleasant memories produce positive feelings. We can learn to switch attention to positive experiences.

when you open your eyes, think 3 things that make you feel good. Enhance it by doing breathing exercise explained fast breathing in and out your nostril as 1, doing 10 pause 10 pause 10, when you are at a high energy level / peak state,

then take a few minutes to think what exactly do you want to do in life/ what’s the ideal life would be like, then decide on 3 things toward your goal that you want to accomplish today and see it done each morning. Congratulations that you have taken the first step!

Give a positive meaning to a challenging event should it occur. Make up a new story that you have been telling yourself that serves you!
Be an inverse paranoid – believe the whole world is here to support you – tell yourself an empowering story.

Own your emotion. feel it, acknowledge it, if it’s anything you don’t like/ doesn’t serve you (such as picking a fight with the boss/ colleague or your neighbour etc), change it by…

doing breathing exercise which is particularly useful in restricted environment e.g. an office, this method is effective) or movement (gym, walk, dance) to shift your emotion. Movement helps to discharge aroused negative feelings.

playing your favourite sound track…

changing your focus (think about the things that make you happy) to shift your emotion
do something you love, listen to music, walk in the woods (if possible)

check regularly how you are feeling in the morning and mid of the day
if it’s not at a peak state 10
what do you do to raise your energy level (nutrition and exercise)

Do at least 3 things during the day that makes you feel good.

Think 3 things that you are grateful for at the end of the day before bed.
Praise yourself for all the things that you have achieved today even if you didn’t do everything that you set out to do. You are going to be better tomorrow…
